The 1954 World Championship Road Race was held in Solingen-Klingenring, West Germany. The circuit was extremely hard and tested the talents of even the best riders.
The excitement of the race came on the final lap. Frenchman Louison Bobet had an untimely puncture with 10 kms to go, but after a quick wheel change he executed a brilliant chase and reconnected with the solo Swiss race leader. Fearing Fritz Schaer's outstanding sprint, Bobet counter-attacked in the closing kilometers and won by 12 second in front of Schaer. Defending champion Fausto Coppi had a hard crash and finished 6th +3’20” behind Bobet.
